Did you know how interesting and international Simmern is?

  • In the Middle Ages, Simmern was the residential town of the county and later the principality of Simmern. The counts and dukes of Simmern had their seat here and the town played an important role in the region.
  • Simmern is home to Simmern Castle, which was built in the 15th century. It was the residence of the Dukes of Simmern and is now home to the Hunsrück Museum. The museum offers insights into the history of the region and the town.
  • The well-known social reformer Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen, who is regarded as one of the founders of the co-operative movement, worked in the region around Simmern. He was committed to improving the living conditions of the rural population, which led to his famous founding of the co-operative banks.
  • Simmern lies in the heart of the Hunsrück, a region known for its own culture and tradition.
  • St Stephen's Church, often referred to as "Simmerner Dom", is an impressive Gothic building in the centre of the town. It was built in the 15th century and is known for its rich decorations and historic carillon.
  • The town and its surroundings served as the location for Edgar Reitz's famous film series "Heimat", which tells the story of the fictional village of Schabbach in the Hunsrück region over several generations.
