Did you know how interesting and international Mannheim is?

  • Mannheim is known as the "city of squares" because the city centre is laid out in a rectangular grid. Instead of street names, there are squares with combinations of letters and numbers, which can make orientation a challenge for those unfamiliar with the city.
  • Mannheim Palace is one of the largest baroque palaces in Europe. It was built in the 18th century and served as the residence of the Electors of the Palatinate. Today it houses parts of the University of Mannheim.
  • In 1886, Carl Benz invented the first automobile in Mannheim, the "Benz Patent Motor Car". Today, the Technoseum in Mannheim commemorates this ground-breaking invention that changed the world.
  • The water tower is the city's landmark. It was completed in 1889 and is located in the centre of Friedrichsplatz, which is considered one of the most beautiful art-nouveau squares in Europe.
  • Mannheim is a very multicultural city. Almost half of its inhabitants have a migrant background, making the city a melting pot of different cultures and traditions.
  • Mannheim has played an important role in the history of music. The "Mannheim School", a group of composers in the 18th century, was known for its innovative contributions to classical music, especially the development of the symphony.
