I wanted to offer with you a glimpse into the slightly eccentric British ways and culture, have you ever heard of a saying "best of British"? Informally it is used to wish someone luck, for example, suppose you were to ask the lovely new girl in your class out for a coffee or your parents for extra pocket money. It is thought that this saying goes back to the army days of early 1942 to 1944, when things were not going too well for the British.
Have you ever heard of the underdog or more importantly, why the British normally always back the underdog? An underdog is quite simply, someone who is most likely to lose at something, therefore the opposite of the favourite. If you google, the top five British underdogs, they are listed as, Eddie the Eagle, Del Boy, Susan Boyle, Leicester City FC and the Jamaican Bobsleigh team. The British have a real quest to support the underdog and take great pleasure in them winning, apparently it gives them hope.
It is December and as the British underdog raised the issue of "hope", we wanted you to think about what you hope to learn about the language you are studying. As I am studying German, I hope to be able to understand more of the nuances in the German language in 2022.
